In Pumamarca, the shamans and Carl prepared a specific despacho, an ayni (reciprocity) despacho. In shamanic tradition, an ayni despacho is done with the intention to bring oneself and one’s community into right relationship with the natural world. |
|
| It creates a sense of union, harmony and reciprocity with nature. | ![]() |

Some of the items included in this despacho are a llama fetus (representing our becoming and unborn potential), red-colored ingredients (red beans, red wine, flowers) to represent the Pachamama and white-colored ingredients (white beans, rice, pisco, flowers) to represent the Apus. | |
After a despacho is prepared, the shaman uses it to cleanse the energy body of each participant. |

To close the ceremony, the despacho is placed in a ceremonial fire. |

While it is being burned the participants must have their backs to the flames so that Apuchin (the spirit of the great condor) can come down to consume the hucha (heavy energy) from the despacho and bring the prayers up to the heavens. |
